Cottagecore began sprinkling social media feeds in 2017. Fueled by Tumblr posts, Taylor Swift albums, and pandemic life, cottagecore was more a full-blown movement by the spring of 2020.

I, of course, am a teensy bit late to the Cottagecore trend. But now I’m really into it. Welcome to the story of my life.

These cottagecore gifts celebrate the flouncy (pretty stickers, a fanciful dress) and practical (soap making kit, a guide to foraging) facets of cottagecore.

What is Cottagecore?

Cottagecore champions the cozy. It’s an internet subculture with a gauzy, muted-colored, ethereal aesthetic. It’s like… combining a Victorian English countryside with 1970’s boho chic.

Cottagecore culture proved an ultimate escape during the 2020 quarantine. And with all the time at home, it suddenly didn’t seem so crazy to hang out in pretty lounge robes and bake bread.

Cottagecore: More Than An Aesthetic

Cottagecore isn’t just laying around in fields, making wildflower crowns and twirling fabric.

While there’s a dominant aesthetic to all this, there’s also a harking back to sustainability and “slow living” that involves homemade pastry (hey, that’s avoiding processed foods, a plus in my book).

Cottagecore activities include:

  • Scrapbooking
  • Knitting
  • Reading
  • Sourdough starters
  • Picnicking
  • Sketching
  • Embroidery
  • Penning hand-written letters
  • Quilting
  • Pressing flowers
  • Crafting
  • Foraging
  • Baking
  • Garden partying

See? Very important!

Cottagecore is a lot of fun. But, like with any internet subculture, let’s not go too crazy. Don’t feel guilty when all our breads aren’t homemade. No one has all the time and money to live like this full time.

Take what you need, leave what you don’t. Maybe make some cookies before buying them, but don’t go out and buy a herd of goats or anything, ok?
